BootGPT puts a language model in a 510 byte boot sector
The point
BootGPT is a neural network that boots a PC with no operating system. The inference engine fits in 510 bytes, loads an 11.5 KB int8 model from the next 23 sectors, and runs in 16 bit real mode on a 386.
Why it matters
It shows builders how small a model runtime can get with int8 quantization.
Key details
- Model uses 8 characters of context and one hidden layer, trained on 3 MB of fake dmesg
- It generates Linux boot logs with timestamps, PCI and ACPI entries for hardware that never existed
